The dryer comes out, the transition hose is inspected, and we check the connection at the wall before anything is cleaned.
A rotating brush is driven down the line from the laundry side, breaking the packed lint loose rather than pushing it into a bend.
The exterior hood comes off and the line is worked from that end too, which is the only way to be sure the last few feet are open.
The flap has to open under airflow. Stuck dampers, added screens and nests are the blockages homeowners never see.
The dryer is reconnected and run, and we check delivery at the hood outside before packing up.

Homeowners reach behind the dryer with a brush, pull out a satisfying handful of lint and reasonably conclude the job is done. The problem is that lint does not distribute evenly along a run. It accumulates where the air slows down: at every elbow, at any low point where condensation collects, and above all at the termination, where the damper flap adds resistance and the airflow leaves the pipe. That is why a line can be clear for the first six feet and packed solid at the hood. It is also why the exterior end has to be opened and worked separately rather than trusted. The worst blockages we have photographed were bird nests built on top of a stuck damper — a full stop at the exact point where the moisture and heat are supposed to leave the house.
Both machines push the same lint down the same kind of pipe, so both need the same cleaning. The difference is what a restriction does. An electric dryer with a blocked vent overheats, and the fuel is the lint itself. A gas dryer has a combustion process at the back of it, so a restricted vent can also push exhaust gases back toward the laundry room instead of out through the hood. That is why our crews check the gas connection and the exhaust path on a gas machine rather than only the lint — and it is why one of our customers ended up with a gas leak found during a routine dryer vent cleaning.
Once a year is the sensible default for a normal household. Push it to every six months if you run several loads a day, if you have a long or complicated run, if you dry a lot of heavy fabrics such as towels and bedding, or if you have pets, because pet hair loads a vent faster than clothing does. The other honest answer is that the machine will tell you: when a load that used to finish in one cycle starts needing two, the line has narrowed enough to matter, whatever the calendar says.
