Why second-floor venting is different

A second-floor dryer almost always means a longer run, more elbows, or a roof termination — all three add risk if planned poorly.

Routing options that work

Pick the shortest viable path to an exterior wall.

  • Direct side-wall termination through the gable end
  • Down through an interior wall to the rim joist
  • Up and out through the roof with a dedicated cap

When to add a booster fan

Any run that exceeds the maximum developed length (35 feet minus penalties for elbows) needs a listed dryer booster fan to keep airflow safe and clothes drying in a single cycle.
