New Construction vs. Retrofit Duct Installation

Open framing means duct runs can take the most efficient path. Trunk lines are sized correctly, returns end up in the right rooms, and everything is verified before drywall closes the walls.

Retrofit installs have to work around finished ceilings, walls, and floors. Expect some soffits or chase builds, and plan for more selective patching than in new construction.

For renovations, decide on the HVAC and duct layout before drywall — the cost difference is significant.
