The default cadence
For most New Jersey homes, every 3 to 5 years is the right cadence for a full air duct cleaning. That keeps dust, pollen, and pet dander from building up to levels you can actually feel in the air.
When to clean sooner
A handful of conditions should pull that timeline forward.
- Pets that shed (dogs, cats, birds)
- Smokers in the home
- Allergies or asthma in the household
- Recent renovation or drywall work
- You just bought the house
- Visible dust on registers within weeks of dusting
Seasonal timing
Spring and fall are the best windows. You clean before the system runs hard for cooling or heating season, so the work you pay for actually circulates through your home for the next six months.
