Traditional ductwork
Traditional systems use trunks and branch lines with 6" to 14" round or rectangular duct. They're quiet, well-understood, and the right answer for most homes with adequate ceiling or floor space.
High-velocity systems
High-velocity systems use 2" to 3" flexible tubing that snakes through walls and floors. They're ideal for older homes — brownstones, antique colonials — that don't have space for conventional duct.
How to decide
If you have an attic, basement, or open floor structure, traditional ductwork is almost always more comfortable, quieter, and cheaper. High-velocity is the right answer when traditional simply doesn't fit.
