Air Duct Installation

What Drives the Cost of a Duct Installation in NJ

Square footage is a weak predictor. These four factors do most of the work.

Access is the biggest variable

A walk-in basement with open joists is a fundamentally different job than a 30-inch crawlspace or a finished home requiring drywall repair.

Labor hours, not materials, drive most of the difference between two quotes on similar homes.

Material and sealing standard

All-rigid with mastic-sealed joints costs more up front than flex with tape and delivers better long-term performance.

Insulation R-value on runs through unconditioned space is another line item worth paying for in New Jersey's climate.

System count and zoning

Two air handlers means two trunk systems. Adding zone dampers and controls adds hardware and commissioning time.

Zoning is usually worth it in multi-level homes with significant temperature differences.

  • Crawlspace or attic-only access
  • Finished ceilings requiring patching
  • Number of supply and return registers
  • Zoning hardware and controls
  • Permit and inspection requirements
  • Removal and disposal of old ductwork

Comparing quotes fairly

Ask each contractor for the duct material, the sealing method, the insulation R-value and whether commissioning numbers are included.

Two quotes without that detail are not comparable at all.
