Dryer Vent Installation Code Requirements in New Jersey

What New Jersey building code actually requires for a residential dryer vent install — material, length, and termination rules.

Required material

Code requires smooth-wall rigid metal duct. Foil flex and plastic duct are not compliant for a permanent run — they trap lint in their ribs and sag over time.

Length and turns

Maximum developed length is generally 35 feet, reduced by 5 feet for every 90° elbow. Long runs need a booster fan to stay safe and effective.

Termination and joints

The vent must terminate outside the home with a backdraft damper and no screen. Joints are sealed with foil tape, not duct tape, and never with screws — screws inside the duct catch lint and start the buildup all over again.
